SDQ to the Puerto Rico Ferry: A Foot-Passenger Guide
Published by A&M Caribbean Group SRL · Published
If you are flying into Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) and continuing to Puerto Rico with Ferries del Caribe, you need a separate road journey to the ferry’s confirmed passenger terminal in Santo Domingo. Verify the ferry first, then arrange the car around its required reporting time, not simply the ship’s departure. If the airport car only drops you off, tell both providers you are traveling without a vehicle aboard the ferry. Confirm the sailing date, passenger terminal, reporting deadline and baggage arrangements before booking the connection.
Does SDQ on the ferry timetable mean the airport?
No. Ferries del Caribe uses Santo Domingo SDQ and San Juan SJU as labels in its maritime timetable. The vessel does not depart from either airport. Your flight arrives at an airport and your ferry leaves from a port; the road journey between them needs its own transport arrangement.
Write the full destination when requesting a car: Ferries del Caribe at the operator-confirmed Santo Domingo passenger terminal. Include the sailing date and entrance instructions. SDQ to SDQ or Santo Domingo alone is unclear. Check the sailing available on your actual date rather than assuming a daily ferry or a departure the morning after a missed connection.
Confirm the boarding terminal, not a ticket office
A sales office is not necessarily where passengers board. Ferries del Caribe lists a Santo Domingo sales location at Malecón Center on Avenida George Washington. Do not use that office address as the car’s destination unless the operator specifically instructs you to visit it.
Ask for the passenger terminal assigned to your sailing, the current passenger entrance and map pin, the permitted private-car drop-off and where to report with your reservation and luggage. Give the same information to dispatch so the road booking and ferry instructions describe the same destination.
What about Sans Souci and Don Diego?
Sans Souci and Don Diego are different terminal locations. Operator materials have referenced both, so choosing the first search result is not a dependable plan. If your reservation, an older document and a map disagree, ask the ferry operator to resolve the difference before the car is booked.
Forward the confirmed terminal and entrance to your driver, and send any later change through the original booking conversation. Our port-terminal guide explains why names matter; the ferry operator must still identify the actual boarding point for your sailing.
Arriving by car does not mean traveling with a vehicle
If a private airport car drops you at the terminal and leaves, you are not taking that vehicle on the ferry. Tell the operator you need the conditions for a passenger without a vehicle aboard. Taking your own car involves a different booking category and additional vehicle arrangements.
This distinction matters when reading reporting times, baggage information and vehicle instructions. Do not apply a vehicle-shipping checklist to an ordinary airport drop-off or assume a road-transfer booking includes passage for any vehicle. Each reservation should clearly describe what you have booked.
Can you fly into SDQ and sail the same day?
It depends on the actual flight, ferry reporting requirement and time between them. A morning landing and evening sailing are not automatically a workable connection. Start with the required terminal reporting time, subtract the airport-to-terminal drive and a suitable road allowance, then consider immigration, collecting bags, customs and meeting the driver.
For example, if your confirmed instructions require arrival three hours before an 18:00 sailing, your terminal target is 15:00. You must leave the airport early enough for the drive; landing at 15:00 would not satisfy it. This is an illustration, not a universal deadline. Obtain the rule for your reservation, including special-date instructions. If the plan needs immediate clearance and the shortest drive, consider an earlier arrival or overnight stay.
Check documents for the entire itinerary
This is international onward travel, not a local boat excursion. Before buying the itinerary, confirm the documents required for your nationality and circumstances with the ferry operator and relevant authorities. Check both your arrival in the Dominican Republic and the onward journey to Puerto Rico. Acceptance for one stage does not settle every requirement for the next.
Keep the ferry reservation, required original travel documents and any requested payment verification accessible. Ask whether advance registration is required and what must still happen at the terminal afterward. Completing an online step should not be treated as permission to ignore the reporting instructions.
Pack for the crossing, not just the airport car
The car’s luggage capacity and the ferry’s baggage rules are separate. Establish which bags may stay with you, which need a separate baggage or cargo process, any size, weight, quantity and charge conditions, and where and when items are released after arrival. Cabin and other passenger arrangements can have different onboard baggage conditions.
Do not assume every suitcase remains accessible during the crossing or is available when you step ashore. Prepare a permitted onboard bag with medication, documents and essentials. Confirm mobility equipment, children’s items and unusual baggage directly with the ferry operator, then tell the car provider what must fit in the vehicle.
Decide what happens if the flight is delayed
Save the ferry operator’s contact and check ticket-change conditions before flying. A private car does not itself protect a separately booked sailing. If a delay threatens the connection, contact both providers and establish whether the ferry reservation can change. One provider receiving a message does not update the other booking.
If you need an overnight stay, first confirm the next suitable sailing, then book accommodation for the revised plan and give the driver its actual address. Do not leave the terminal as the destination after changing plans. Choose accommodation around the itinerary rather than assuming an airport hotel is always the most convenient.
Send a ferry-specific transfer request
A clear message is: “We arrive at SDQ on [local date], flight [number], with [passengers and luggage]. We are traveling without a vehicle on Ferries del Caribe to Puerto Rico on [sailing date]. The operator confirms [terminal, entrance and map pin], and we must report by [time]. Please confirm road-transfer availability, meeting instructions and the full fare.”
Include child-seat or assistance requirements and ask dispatch to acknowledge the exact terminal instead of relying on a general port-zone selection. Sending a request does not confirm a vehicle. Obtain the accepted booking in writing, and keep the ferry and car confirmations together with local dates and times.
Use the arrival date for a future return pickup
If you also arrange a future ferry-to-airport pickup, send the ferry’s arrival date, not just its departure date. Allow for disembarkation and port formalities before treating your group as ready for the car. Provide the onward flight and the airline’s required airport-arrival time so the return is assessed separately.
Once the passenger terminal and reporting time are confirmed, you can request an airport-to-port transfer from SDQAirportTransfer.com. Include the exact destination and deadline so dispatch can assess the road journey. A general zone price is not confirmation of every terminal entrance, ferry ticket or protected connection.
