SDQ, PUJ or LRM: choose an airport for your Dominican itinerary

Compare the final destination and the complete journey, not the flight price alone.

Short answer

SDQ is Las Américas, serving Santo Domingo; PUJ is Punta Cana; LRM is La Romana. Choose using your actual hotel or port location, flight schedule and total ground-transport cost. A resort marketed as Punta Cana may still need a substantial local drive, and a cheap flight to SDQ can require a longer east-coast transfer.

Match the airport code to the accommodation

Start with the hotel's address and map pin, not a marketing region alone. SDQ is the relevant comparison for a Santo Domingo city stay, PUJ for the Punta Cana area and LRM for La Romana. Compare the actual route from each airport before deciding; the nearest airport is not always the one with a useful flight schedule.

Santo Domingo also has La Isabela/Joaquín Balaguer airport, code JBQ. It is a different airport from SDQ. Check every ticket segment and tell dispatch the three-letter code rather than booking only a Santo Domingo airport pickup.

Compare the total cost for your party

Add airfare, bags, the confirmed vehicle price and any extra hotel night. Compare like-for-like transport: a shared seat and a private vehicle are different products. Include the return airport too; an arrival saving may be offset by a more expensive departure connection.

For families or golfers, ask whether the quote includes the required seats and luggage capacity. For seven or more passengers, obtain the correct van arrangement rather than multiplying a small-car fare or assuming all luggage fits because there are enough seats.

Treat an airport change as a separate journey

If one ticket lands at SDQ and another departs from PUJ or LRM, allow time to enter the country, collect luggage, drive and check in again. Do not compare the two flight times as though the connection happened inside one terminal.

Ask the airlines what happens if the first flight is delayed, especially with separate tickets. A transfer operator can plan the road segment but cannot protect the onward ticket. If the available margin is tight, change the itinerary rather than depending on an optimistic road estimate.
